Fairouz

Fairouz is a legendary Lebanese singer, an icon in the Arab world. She was born in Lebanon in 1935 and eventually became one of the most important singers in the Middle East. She has multiple nicknames including the ‘Angel of Lebanon’ and the ‘Pearl of the Middle East’. For many people in Lebanon, Fairouz is sacred. She symbolizes unity in the country. For many, she was seen as the guardian angel, and for good reason. The Lebanese Civil War broke out, lasting from 1975 to 1990. It began as a sectarian conflict between different religious and ethnic groups in Lebanon. Fairouz’s role during the civil war was primarily cultural and symbolic. Her songs, which often told stories of love, hope, and the beauty of Lebanon, offered people a sense of identity and connection in a time of chaos and division.
